DRAWING FROM OBSERVATION:

KEEPING A SKETCHBOOK

According to the intro to the recent show of artists’ sketchbooks at the Fogg Art Museum “Artists have used sketchbooks for centuries, entrusting travel sketches, figure studies, compositional ideas, and notes of every kind to their pages. Designed to be easily portable, sketchbooks are often kept in a pocket, and offer an unusually personal glimpse of the artist at work.” The Fogg owns thirty-four sketchbooks by John Singer Sargent. Frida Kahlo combined personal writings with her colorful sketches. Reginald Marsh (1898-1954) was rarely without a sketchbook and The Smithsonian Archives has microfilmed two hundred and twelve of them.

Classes will include sketching on site from observation; landscape, portraits, and still life, as well as working from memory.
